BlackBerries, Apple, and a Few Carrots – A New Frontier in Vision Therapy

Adam Cegielski

We recently passed that year 2015, which was such a critical date to most of us who grew up in the 80s! Back to the Future II, when Michael J Fox arrives in the year 2015 to flying cars! I now watch that movie with my children and they laugh that 2015 is now in the past! Leave it to Elon Musk, our modern day Einstein, and we will have those flying cars soon!

So much has changed since I sent that first e-mail. I believe it was 1994, my first year of University, and I recall sitting in at the Library in front of a computer and pressing “send” on my first ever e-mail to someone in Australia! Swoosh… it was off into cyberspace, and I went home to prepare for the start of school, and I returned the next morning to check in on this e-mail thing: Voila, what did I find? “Hello from Australia”!

After my first year of University, a Canadian (Waterloo) based company called Research in Motion (rim) released the BlackBerry pager and this marked the beginning of e-mail on a mobile device! This innovative little company created a breakthrough in mobile that would start to change the world in so many ways. It wouldn’t be long before we have all of these tools in the palm of our hands!

Let’s fast forward 12 years now to June 29th, 2007 and Apple had just released the first iPhone! Everyone was talking about all the different ways that Apple would fail with the iPhone. None more common than “I love my tactile keyboard, no thanks”, something we at Eyecarrot can appreciate with the development of our new Saccadic Fixator! The iPhone created the start of a new generation of devices, that would leverage the acceleration of Wi-Fi/Internet speeds, screen resolutions, video compression advancements and gps and produced globalized connectivity that we have been visualizing since The Jetsons!

Fast forward another 10 years, and we now have iPads that are more powerful than a basic desktop computer, smartwatches that can manage our home automation systems, and seamless distribution of content via apps and video!

The world is evolving like never before! Scheduled programming has been replaced by Netflix and Amazon Prime; Podcasts have largely displaced radio; and Spotify and iTunes have have revolutionized the music industry. Don’t be surprised if your next Bernell order arrives by drone delivery! Welcome to a new generation of children, like mine, who picked up a smart phone, and intuitively swiped through photos and videos as if they were born with that device in their hand! My dream of having a calculator watch has finally arrived —I was so jealous of the kids that had these in the 80s.

What does this all mean for Optometry and Vision Therapy? Carrots are still good for the eyes, iPads are good for Optometrists and their teams, and over half of the world now has a smartphone and access to the Internet. It means your patients are sitting in your waiting rooms watching streaming video on Facebook, watching testimonials of vision therapy success stories or reading the latest news coming out of journals and studies on the subject matter. Their children have likely spent way too much time on mobile devices since the 2007 launch of the modern day “pacifier” and now need vision therapy.

Most importantly, with the Binovi platform, we are working to give Optometrists, Therapists and Patients the type of experience they are used to receiving in the world we live in today! Expert video production quality to promote better understanding, efficiencies of digital prescribing of activities, tracking of therapy compliance, data capture that allows for insights into therapy, and even the simplicity of finding a vt Optometrist by downloading an app! Technology is rapidly changing the way businesses are operated, and we are building Binovi to apply this technology to the complexities of running a modern vt Practice.

It’s time to embrace technology for what it can do for your practice, and more importantly, for what it can do to spawn a new Era for Behavioral Optometry! As a good friend once told me when I turned on my first iPhone: “Welcome to the future!”
