Why Binovi? Dr. Leonard J. Press and Dr. Robert Sanet Weigh In
We aim to improve the efficiency of how Vision Therapy is offered to help transform human vision performance through our Binovi Platform. It is important to us that you understand what Binovi is, how it’s used and what it does. Understanding the behind-the-scenes of the Binovi platform is an important part of answering the question, “Why Binovi?”.
Our support team has worked with our Director of Global Education, Dr. Leonard J. Press, and Dr. Robert Sanet, Special Advisor for Behavioural Optometry and Vision Training to compile a few of our Frequently Asked Questions to help you better understand the ins and outs of Binovi and answer some questions that are initially most relevant to your needs.
Who has access to the Binovi Platform?
The Binovi App is designed for optometrists with a background in behavioral, developmental, and neuro-optometric rehabilitative care (hereafter referred to as behavioral optometrist). Its use is restricted to optometrists who are members of covd, oepf, covt&r, siodec, boaf, babo, acbo, and/or comof. The optometrist has total control over who has access to the application, the specific procedures accessed, and how and when the procedure will be utilized. Use of the app by non-optometrists is permissible only under optometric prescription and guidance.
How do I sign up for Binovi?
To gain access to the Binovi platform, each therapist must first sign up through the Eyecarrot website. On the Eyecarrot homepage a “Sign Up” button is found in the top right corner; press the button to begin the sign-up process. Once completed, the therapist & clinic will be placed in a queue. This queue, may last up to 7 days. During this time, Eyecarrot will verify if the therapist is qualified for the Binovi application. To qualify the therapist must be a member of a major optometric association and have good standing. Once Eyecarrot has completed the verification process, the therapist will receive an e-mail permitting them access to the Binovi Pro registration.
What should I expect with the Binovi Registration Process?
Once Eyecarrot has completed the verification process, the therapist will receive an e-mail permitting them access to the Binovi Pro registration. Once on the Binovi Pro registration, the therapist will need to fill in all the environments. The Binovi registration will allow the therapist to choose login credentials, clinic location(s), and a payment plan. All this information can be altered inside the Binovi Admin portal. Completing the registration will allow the therapist to access the Binovi Pro application using the credentials created in the registration.
What is the purpose of the Binovi Platform?
The Binovi App was developed to support the behavioral optometrist by providing a platform through which vision therapy procedures are prescribed, and to streamline communication between the patient and the vision therapy care team as procedures are implemented and completed.
The program has been designed to be used as a communication and instructional tool to help the optometric VT team provide more efficient and effective vision therapy. Traditionally VT procedures are demonstrated one time in-office with written instructions to take home. Communication between what the patient is doing at home and the patient’s progress can be lacking. The Eyecarrot Binovi platform offers high quality videos to complement written directions that can be used for staff training purposes as well as reinforcing in-office and home therapy accuracy and communication.
What are the benefits to using Binovi?
- Paperless: All material in one place, and environmentally friendly.
- Saves Time: No need to look for directions or struggle with explanations.
- Communication: Uniformity and structure between ODs and therapists.
- Staff Training: Procedures and videos aid the orientation of new therapists.
- Compliance: Improves patient’s understanding and compliance with procedures.
- Broadens your Base: Prescribe and monitor therapy for patients whose ability to participate in weekly in-office therapy sessions is limited.
- Maintenance: Facilitates continuing home VT as prescribed after in-office therapy is completed.
What vt Activities are Included in the app?
All the home VT activities include hd video and step-by-step instructions.
The VT procedures are divided into 7 different categories: Ocular motility, accommodation, binocularity, bilateral integration, balance/visual-vestibular, fine-motor control, and visual memory/visualization. Currently there are 117 VT procedures in the library with many more to be added. There will be no additional cost to you for these added procedures.
Coming soon: In-office procedures and the oep grid
Can I add my own activities to Binovi?
Yes, the Eyecarrot team will assist you by placing your personal activities into the Binovi application. These customized procedures will allow therapists to assign their personal activities for a patient to take home. Each exercise is fully customizable and can include pictures, videos, and custom instructions.
Who is in control of the patient’s therapy plan?
The prescribing Behavioral Optometrist is in total control of the program. the VT-OD makes all decisions on using the VT videos to train staff, prescribing VT procedures to supplement in-office VT, use for home VT for patients who cannot afford in-office VT or patients who cannot come in for weekly visits because of long travel distances, and for patients who need to continue with home VT after in-office VT is completed. Each individual VT-OD decides which VT procedures to prescribe and when to prescribe or discontinue them.
How long are videos active?
There is a one-time fee to the optometrist for each patient enrolled in the program which is good for one year of use for a specific patient. The individual VT-OD decides how much to charge the patient. Most OD’s charge a one-time up-front fee to the patient before the VT program begins. The VT-OD can decide to continue or terminate the program for a patient at any time during the year.
The VT-OD can prescribe any of the more than 100 VT procedures currently in the Sanet VT procedures library. In addition, each VT-OD can add personal VT-procedures to their personal library or make the procedures available to other VT-OD’s who are signed up for the program.
How do I communicate with patients when they are at home?
The platform offers the opportunity for ongoing communication between office and home. The parent/patient routinely reports on the attitude of the patient, and the parent/patient is asked to monitor performance each time the patient performs a procedure. In addition, the patent/patient can write notes or ask written questions to the prescribing OD/Vision Therapist and the prescribing OD/Vision Therapist can write instructions or respond to questions as needed.
In the USA and Canada there are currently more than 100 VT-OD’s either signed up or waiting to register for the program as soon as they are approved. A large group of behavioral optometrists in Spain is in the process of signing up as well. It is expected that there will be more than 500 VT offices worldwide using the program before the end of the year.
